Acquiring, Representing and Processing Spatial Relations

چکیده
The study of spatial relations has been an important research topic in a number of different domains. As a result several relation-based systems have been developed to represent and process spatial relations. This paper identifies the concepts underlying the representation of spatial relations and outlines the processes involved in relation-based information processing. In the paper we also discuss the need for alternative forms of relation-based representations, and describe the applicability of the results of various scientific areas to the geographic domain.

An application-oriented view on graded spatial relations
Approaches for modeling graded spatial relations abound in the literature on image processing and on geographic information systems. In contrast, few proposals have addressed the use of degrees in application contexts where inference plays a central role. We argue that the use of degrees is nonetheless natural in such contexts, and may enhance the application potential of qualitative spatial re...

Nowadays, geospatial information systems (GIS) are widely used to solve different spatial problems based on various types of fundamental data: spatial, temporal, attribute and topological relations. Topological relations are the most important part of GIS which distinguish it from the other kinds of information technologies. One of the important mechanisms for representing topological relations...
متن کاملSpatial Language Processing in the Blind: Evidence for a Supramodal Representation and Cortical Reorganization
Neuropsychological and imaging studies have shown that the left supramarginal gyrus (SMG) is specifically involved in processing spatial terms (e.g. above, left of), which locate places and objects in the world. The current fMRI study focused on the nature and specificity of representing spatial language in the left SMG by combining behavioral and neuronal activation data in blind and sighted i...
متن کاملStudy of Numerical Processing Speed, Implicit and Explicit Memory, Active and Passive Memory, Conservation Abilities, and Visual-Spatial Skills of Students with Dyscalculia
Background and Purpose: Learning disorder is one of the common disorders in students, which can lead to the occurrence of educational problems and secondary disorders in them. Based on psychopathological criteria, dyscalculia is one of the subcategories of learning disorder. Children with this disorder have problems in perception of spatial relations and in different cognitive abilities. Theref...
متن کاملA general characterization of representing and determining fuzzy spatial relations
A considerable amount of fuzzy spatial data emerged in various applications leads to investigation of fuzzy spatial data and their fuzzy relations. Because of complex requirements, it is challenging to propose a general fuzzy spatial relationship representation and a general algorithm for determining all fuzzy spatial relations. This paper, presents a general characterization of representing fu...
